04. Via Sbrinz
tender
The Via Sbrin is one of the oldest Alpine transit routes in Europe and was used over 3000 years ago.
We ride in the footsteps of the Romans and later muleteers who brought cheese (Sbrinz) from the market in Lucerne to Domodossola and from there, textiles, wine and spices back to Switzerland.
We start near Stansstad, the place where the horses were loaded. The morning before departure, the horses are checked, the equipment is checked and supplemented where necessary. This is followed by a finesse test, which shows us who we need to pay particular attention to.
We ride along the Aa (cross 3 suspension bridges) to Engelberg, where we spend the night not in the monastery but in St. Jakob. This is one of the longest stretches and the first challenge to your comfort zone. There is an alternative route, but so far all horses and riders have mastered the bridges. This includes two 1000 kg cold-blooded horses (Belgian) from Hamburg.
The next day is short but intense. The route is only 11 km but we cross the Joch Pass at 2200 m and lead the horses to the Suscht on the Engstlenalp. On the way we pass a place of power and if we are lucky, an alphorn will sound to welcome us. The first tourists from Baden have already spent the night here on their way to Rome.
The next day we go over the Alp to Wyler, where we stop for a bite to eat, and then we go on the other side of the valley via Unterstock to Guttannen. Here we spend the night in a historic hotel and the
Horses are standing in a paddock next door.

The third day takes us up to the Grimsel on hiking trails. We only have to ride on the road for a short stretch (in bad weather). For most of the route we ride and lead on paths carved into the rock by the Romans and ride over bridges from Roman times up the former glacier valley. At the top of the pass, we stop for a break and then lead the horses down to Oberwald in the Valais. This is the longest stretch to be covered (29 km) and the next day we have a break where we can let the horses run without luggage or simply relax by the river.
After the rest day, we head over the Griess Pass to Riale Italy. The descent down to Pomatt is the highlight of the tour. Here the horses show what they can do and your comfort zone has expanded considerably over the days. We spend the night in the Aalts Dorf guesthouse and enjoy real Italian cuisine while the horses are looked after in a large pasture.
We return to Switzerland via the San Giacomo and the Corno Hut, the end of our tour. The next morning we head back home after breakfast. Weather and adverse conditions in the Alps can force us to choose alternative routes. Safety comes first.
